ABOUT THE WALK

Join historian Steve Martin and I (Iyamide Thomas, Historical Researcher) on this walk through Clapham as we tell the often untold story of how Britain through involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its abolition is uniquely linked to Sierra Leone, its ‘Krio’ people (mainly the descendants of previously enslaved African, African-American and Caribbean people) and the founding of a ‘Province of Freedom’ and ‘Free Town’ by abolitionists Granville Sharp and others known as the ‘Clapham Sect’ - mainly prominent, wealthy, evangelical Anglicans who worshipped at Holy Trinity Church on Clapham Common at the end of the 18th Century. William Wilberforce and Henry Thornton (who became Members of Parliament for Hull and Southwark respectively), were two of the group’s most influential leaders and many of the meetings were held in their houses in Clapham. In 1799 did you know the Sect founded the ‘African Academy’, a school to educate mainly boys from Africa, a few of whom are buried in Clapham? All this and much more fascinating “London Unseen” history awaits you on this interesting heritage trail! (Exact meeting point details will be sent to registrants later). AFTER THE WALK

We plan to give you a taste of Sierra Leonean style finger food and drink after the walk. We might either have a picnic on the Common (weather permitting!), use a venue if we secure one or give you take-away bags. We'll keep you posted.

SOME HEALTH AND SAFETY TIPS

*All of the walk will be outdoors and as such participants are at lower risk of Covid-19 but can socially distance if they wish or even wear a mask.

* We will be on our feet for a little over an hour so please ensure you wear comfortable, clothing and footwear appropriate for the day’s weather.

* At times we will be walking on main roads so please be cautious of pedestrians and traffic signals etc.
