Event description

Description

Marvel antihero the Punisher is often characterized as a deeply conservative figure. Due to his unyielding methods of exacting violent justice upon criminals, much has been discussed about the Punisher’s politics throughout history. TV series Marvel’s The Punisher (Netflix, 2017) is equally compelling due to its politically controversial content. What is the place of the Punisher within today’s politics? Moreover, how has the series been received within the complex context of Trump-era politics?

Miriam Kent is a Lecturer in Film and Media Studies at the University of East Anglia. Her research focuses on representations of gender and identity in superhero narratives and with particular interest in Marvel comics and film.

This talk is part of the 2AD Memorial Library’s Spring 2019 Lecture Series. The series features a range of scholars from different disciplines as they discuss the changing face of American culture and our understanding of our own history.

Feel free to bring own refreshments, just no hot food.
