Description

A History of the Brighton Workhouses
The Regency Town House, 13 Brunswick Square, Brighton & Hove, East Sussex, BN3 1EH
This talk is about the ‘other side’ or ‘hidden history’ of Brighton rather than the one of popular imagination: that of the high lifestyle of the rich and famous during the years of royal patronage.
For over 200 years the town’s workhouses illustrated the jarring reality of the poverty and squalor of life for many inhabitants.
The two main workhouses were at Church Hill and Elm Grove, and there was also the children’s industrial school at Warren Farm. Through extracts from the rootless tramping poor and the indigenous poor, we will hear the voice of some of the forgotten lives of Brighton.
