Rough sleeping has more than doubled since the Conservatives took power in 2010. Over 120,000 children in the UK live without a permanent home, some of whom are being housed in shipping containers. Conservative policies have fuelled this crisis in part because they failed to build enough genuine affordable housing and failed to protect private rental tenants.

Today, fewer people are able to buy their own homes, and private rent costs are rising faster than people’s pay. To tackle the housing crisis, Labour has pledged to end rough sleeping, introduce a definition of "affordable" linked to income not the market, protect renters, and build 1 million homes over 10 years to a zero-carbon standard.

We don't have enough homes in the UK, but those we have account for 14% of our country's total carbon emissions. To achieve net-zero by 2050, we need to eliminate close to all greenhouse gas emissions from our buildings. Under this Government, emission reduction from residential buildings have stalled and energy use in homes has been on the rise.

Building more clean, green and resilient homes will tackle the housing crisis, help get us to net zero by 2050, and create jobs in the process. This event will see key housing campaigners discuss how Labour can provide radical solutions to the housing and environmental crises.
