This workshop is an introduction to the different types of controlled drugs, exploring some of the major issues connected to substance use. As well as providing an awareness of the possibilities for reducing drug and alcohol related harm. It will focus on practical suggestions for those working with others who are using substances.

It is appropriate for workers from a wide range of agencies, who will or do encounter drug use in the course of their work.

By the end of the session participants will be able to:

  • Increase their knowledge and understanding of drug and alcohol use
  • Explore ways of reducing harm relative to where individuals are on the cycle of change.
  • Identify range of commonly used substances and categorise them according to effect, duration and legal status
  • Reflect on the role of attitudes when working with drug and alcohol use
  • Respond to drug and alcohol use more confidently
  • Look at habits, routines and how they can lead to addictive behaviour
  • Understand the practical use of naloxone in reversing opioid overdose
