Step back in time and explore the fascinating history of Tate Britain through its archival collections. This visit offers a unique opportunity to follow a chronology of key moments in the gallery’s story: from Henry Tate’s founding gift and the legacy of the Millbank Penitentiary, to the earliest Board minutes, the impact of World War II, and more recent developments.
Using original records and images, we will trace how Tate Britain has evolved over the decades, offering fresh insight into its role in the cultural life of the nation.
The session will begin with a short introduction to set the context, after which you will be able to explore the documents and pictures that bring Tate’s history to life.
