Event description
This project provides national support for the effective development of pedagogy in the teaching of A level Mathematics.

About this Event

What is involved?

The working group will be run remotely via Zoom and will run across 6 twilight sessions from 4.00 – 5.30.

Participants are expected to attend each session and to take part in GAP tasks between each session, the nature of which will be determined in each session.

Who can apply?

The project is aimed at schools/colleges/departments that want to develop one or more aspects of their A level pedagogy including use of technology. It would be suitable for existing leaders of A level teaching or experienced teachers of A level Maths who wish to lead the development of pedagogy in A level teaching with other colleagues in their own or other schools/colleges. Teachers who will find this Work Group particularly useful include those who have already completed other A level subject knowledge and pedagogy courses (or similar) and are able to work with other colleagues in their own or other schools/colleges.

What is the cost?

The Developing A Level Pedagogy project is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme and the AMSP so is free to participating schools/colleges.

Intended Outcomes

Participants and their departments will:

 deepen understanding of the content and requirements of the linear A level Maths

 understand the purpose of the over-arching themes and their impact on teaching and learning, including use of technology

 be confident to teach aspects of the content (particularly areas of historic student weakness)

 plan sequences of lessons which meet the requirements of the A level, including addressing the overarching themes and use of technology

 Support colleagues in their own school/college in embedding themes from the Work Group.


Schools/colleges must be able to commit to the full academic year’s programme. This involves a total of three days of face-to-face (or equivalent) support across the academic year, as well as classroom and school-based activity. Participants must also be supported by their school/college leadership to explore outcomes from the project with other colleagues in their department.

Covid Recovery

The risk of cross contamination between schools is too high for us to consider face-to-face Work Groups. Therefore, all Work Groups will take place online this year.

Who is leading the Group?

Charlotte Reidy

I am an experienced teacher of mathematics and have worked in several schools across Cambridgeshire. I have an MEd in mathematics education and have intensely pursued my own professional development in the last few years regarding the linear A level. I have participated in and led several workgroups/maths hub initiatives across a range of focus areas.

Dave Banham

I have been teaching in Cambridgeshire and Essex for 27 years and have been Head of Department in 3 schools. Currently I am working as an assistant head at Chesterton Community College, overseeing the maths department. I am a qualified AST, SLE and PD lead for the NCETM.
