Event description

Description

There has never been a more urgent need to rebalance the UK economy. With real economy productivity still too low, and prosperity too concentrated in London and the Southeast, our economy remains one of the most geographically imbalanced in Europe. Whilst already severe, these challenges are likely to become even more acute in the context of Brexit and upcoming reforms to local government financing.

A growing body of evidence, including extensive research carried out by the New Economics Foundation, suggests that locally rooted, stakeholder banks could help counteract and address these issues, and deliver a much more inclusive growth and localised prosperity throughout the UK. For this reason, establishing regional banks was one of the recommendations of the RSA Inclusive Growth Commission.

This research is backed up by increasing activity on the ground from a growing body of local banking practitioners, who are developing financial institutions that pursue a social and locally focussed mission as well as a financial one, which lend to the real and productive economy.

The New Economics Foundation and the RSA are therefore delighted to invite you to one of three interactive roundtable discussions we are convening to bring local banking practitioners and key stakeholders together. Working in partnership with local hosts in Birmingham, Bristol, and London, the local banking roundtable events will explore:

What is local banking, and how can it benefit the UK?

What are the motivations and barriers to establishing these kinds of banks – and how do these present in practice in your area?

How could councils and other key stakeholders help to catalyse the establishment of socially impactful, local stakeholder banks – in your city?

Each discussion will be focus specifically on the local context, and will include facilitated workshops and interactive discussions to leverage the expertise, knowledge and experience of the participants in the room.

We very much hope you can join us, and we look forward to seeing you at the Tavern Room, RSA, 8 John Adam Street, London, WC2N 6EZ on the 5th July.
