A Man on a Mission is a great story of oppression, heroism, humanity, kindness, and decency written in exquisite detail with themes that thread very well through the ages.

There are many important characters in this play; the most influential are Nurmagambet/Baluan Sholak, Tatyana, Dolgonosov, Galina, Balkash, Akylbai and Trotskii.

Baluan Sholak or the “fingerless strong man” is an intelligent and articulate young man who wins a local competition and impresses the judge who renames him Baluan Sholak. After winning the competition Baluan is given a scarf by a young woman, Galina with whom he becomes besotted. Baluan is however already married to Balkash who quickly becomes aware of her husband’s new love interest and she is not very pleased.

Meanwhile elections are being held and clans are asked to vote for or against the local Russian district heads and settlers and in such cases as in Ireland during the times of oppression and land grabbing tensions are running high and the local clans are afraid of what might become of them if they vote against the richer Russian settlers. Baluan’s clan vote against the settlers and he decide to visit the local district heads to discuss the terms of any new arrangements that might affect his people. This decision causes consternation and Dolgonosov (district head), his wife Elizaveta, his daughter Tatyana and an additional district head Trotskii greet him in a condescending, rude and confrontational manner. This does not go unnoticed by Baluan and his best friend and constant companion, Akylbai.
