A New Type of Community Hub: Inclusive & Effective Community Sustainability

Overview

A practical way to strengthen a community, enliven shopping areas, and help people save money, the environment and learn new skills.

Since 2022, Greener & Cleaner (a community group, turned CIC, turned award winning charity) has been piloting a unique Community Hub model that transforms a prominent, vacant shopping centre unit (or other high footfall/mainstream space) into a thriving, reliable, and engaging community space - building community sustainability, adaptability and resilience.

In a time of cost of living crisis, mental health crisis, loneliness crisis and unemployment, and where we have lost many Community Centres and Youth Centres (and many Community Centres have been notionally built but remain empty), this is a multi-impact model that can be scaled up and down.

A model using a space at the heart of a community to provide a permanent and reliable Community Hub with pop up events and projects out in the wider community.

With over 1,000 visitors a month and additional events and projects out in the community, their Community Hub pilot in Bromley is a place where local people from all walks of life share their skills and knowledge to address social, economic, wellbeing, and environmental needs - all through the lens of sustainability.

This model has been successfully empowering a much broader range of the public to collaborate on a journey that meets a wide range of their needs and concerns.

Join this free lunchtime event to hear about the model and gain practical ideas and advice on how to create a more inclusive and permanent community sustainability space/project - which also boosts local adaptability and resilience - a neighbourhood or area.

This is a chance to hear a positive story in challenging times and hear some interesting first hand experiences around key areas such as more incusive and accessible public engagement/support especially around sustainability, diversification of funding streams and the balance between volunteers and staffing.

This may be a first step in a longer journey. If on the basis of what you hear you know of a neighbourhood, community, or council that might like to create its own Community Hub, Parisa Wright may be able to provide further support and advice with a view to creating a project.
