Event description

Description

Phil ‘Swill’ Odgers is well known as one half of the legendary joint vocal strike force of UK folk rebel rockers The Men They Couldn’t Hang. He is also a formidable, well-loved and prolific solo artist in his own right. Audiences around the world from Cairo to Reykjavik, Brisbane to Tokyo and Berlin to London have submitted to his effervescent and heartfelt vocal style.

Hot on the heels of his critically acclaimed 'partial' autobiography 'Tales From The Tracks', knock-out album 'Roll To The Left', sold out UK tour and with a new LP in the works - Phil 'Swill' Odgers plays this special gig at Gosforth Civic Theatre, Regent Farm Road, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE3 3HD. With its great reputation as a unique venue and cultural hotspot with a great sound combined with ‘Swill’s’ reputation as a songsmith, raconteur and connoisseur of fine ales this has all the signs of being a night to remember.

As singer and acoustic guitarist with his band ‘The Men They Couldn’t Hang’ he has appeared as special guest to Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Billy Bragg, David Bowie and Stiff Little Fingers to namedrop but a few. A fine musician and songwriter, his influences are far-reaching, ranging from his Scottish roots, through 50's/60's rock ‘n' roll, to punk, folk and country. At this special performance at The Gosforth Civic Theatre you will have the opportunity to hear songs from this album, along with favourites from Phil’s back catalogue and even some TMTCH classics.

Billy Bragg refers to him as “a natural born troubadour”.

Elvis Costello has described him as “An undervalued national treasure, his writing style is a combination of Scottish roots, Irish roll and Anglicana”.

Liz Kershaw, in her Radio show, said that “Swill (Phil Odgers), has a voice like honey and an extraordinary way of writing a song that tells a story we can all relate to”.

Bobby Valentino:

The man who co-wrote and played violin on The Bluebells 'Young at Heart', Bobby has played on records by Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, The Alabama 3 and Paul Weller to name but a few. He has also contributed to many recordings by The Men They Couldn't Hang as well as frequently appearing with them on stage.

Bobby's vocal talents are demonstrated on his solo albums 'This is Murder' and 'Pat-a-Cake, Pat-a-Cake' both of which will be on sale on the night.

Phil ‘Swill’ Odgers and Bobby Valentino – what a combination!!
