Event description

Description

Join NaTakallam's UK team, founders and collaborators for an evening celebrating NaTakallam's work in the UK and beyond!

Date: February 1, 6.00 - 8.00pm

Location: the P21 Gallery in London

Additionally, don't miss the exhibit disPLACED, a very topical display.

Connect over tea, coffee and Middle Eastern treats and hear from:

  • NaTakallam’s founders about the organisation’s journey thus far and our provision of Arabic sessions for UK schools.

  • NaTakallam’s “conversation partners” (CPs) who will be skyping in from Lebanon and Europe about their stories and experience with the program

  • Alfanar, the first Arab venture philanthropy organisation whose mission is to strengthen sustainable, grassroots organisations that generate financial and social returns while transforming lives in deprived communities in the Arab world

The Syrian conflict has triggered the worst refugee crisis of our time. By leveraging the global internet economy for the past two years, NaTakallam has enabled over 100 displaced persons, primarily from Syria and Iraq, to access self-generated income. NaTakallam actively recruits and trains them as “conversation partners”, connecting them to hundreds of Arabic learners worldwide.

Having pioneered the concept of language learning delivered by refugees, NaTakallam is now partnering with universities and schools worldwide. With a significant number of language learners from the UK, our supporters also include the British Council and the first Venture Philanthropy Organisation dedicated exclusively to Arab-focused initiatives, UK-based Alfanar.

Our partners at the British Council as well as those at Qatar Foundation International (QFI) are making sure all students aged 5 to 18 are given a chance to experience NaTakallam: any educator throughout the UK can sign up for NaTakallam in the classroom, FREE of charge, making sure that both refugees and students are welcome!

P21 Gallery in London is an independent gallery that promotes contemporary Middle Eastern and Arab art and culture. Don't miss the gallery's exhibit disPLACED, which brings together artists whose work evokes a wide range of responses to the title theme, including photography, video, painting, prints, sculpture, as well as an accumulative installation of small figurines made by the public.
