Event description

Description

Hastings Library's writer in residence, Alan Ward, is offering free one-to-one feedback sessions. At a session, you will have the opportunity to discuss some of your writing.

The session will offer:

  • Feedback and thoughts for development on a short story of up to 2,000 words or extract of the same length from a longer piece of writing (fiction / non-fiction),
  • or feedback and thoughts for development on a poem or series of poems (up to 150 lines of poetry).
  • Discussion around finding opportunities for your writing.

The session will focus the discussion on you and your writing. It's not a proofreading session or a writing workshop. You will need to send and electronic copy of any writing you wish to discuss one week before the session. Please read the "answers to common questions" below, as they include some important information.

These events are designed for adults (ages 17 and up), but younger participants may book if they wish.

The one-to-one session will last up to one hour.

Please book online to reserve your time slot. Only one booking per person, and only one person per time slot (unless you are discussing a single piece of work by more than one author). Availability is limited and only booked attendees will be able to participate in these events. If you book onto an event but then can't make it, please cancel your booking via Eventbrite or contact us to let us know: if you can't make it we'd like someone else to be able to benefit from the opportunity.

Some participants may be invited to read at Hastings Library's official opening ceremony later in the year.

These events are part of East Sussex County Council's Advantage East Sussex project, funded by Arts Council England.

Answers to common questions:

What sort of writing can be discussed?
It doesn't matter what genre or form you wish to discuss. Short stories, poetry and non-fiction are all welcome. We can even talk about your radio, film or TV script idea, your graphic novel ... whatever you like. You are also welcome to come along simply to discuss an idea or just to meet a fellow writer. You can find out more about Alan on his website at www.alanjohnward.com. He has published both poetry and short fiction, as well as non-fiction articles, and been recognised in international competitions for his poetry. He has a professional background in marketing and has previously worked for The Poetry Society.

Do I need to bring anything with me?
It is recommended that you bring two print outs of the piece of work you wish to discuss (only the extract of the work is necessary if it is part of a longer piece).

Do I need to send anything in advance?
Yes, at least one week before your session you must email an electronic version of the piece of writing you wish to discuss to hastings@alanjohnward.com. Receipt of your email will be acknowledged. If you do not email the writing to this timescale, some time may be spent going through it at the beginning of your one-to-one. If the writing you send is longer than the specified word / line count, it may not all be read in advance of your session. If you don't wish to send anything in advance and just want to use the time to discuss an idea or writing in general, that's fine.

I've already attended or plan to attend a writing workshop as part of the writer in residence programme, can I still have a one-to-one?
Yes, absolutely, if you have some work you would like to discuss you're very welcome to book a one-to-one session.

Where in the library will the session be held?
Please come to the third floor when you arrive, the location will be clearly marked. If you have trouble finding it, just ask a member of staff.

Is there disabled access?
The workshops will take place on the third floor of the library, which can be accessed by a lift. If you have any other needs please contact us in advance of the workshop to discuss them.
