Event description

Description

The number of deaths from chronic respiratory diseases in Northern Ireland is on the rise. Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death locally, while deaths from chronic lower respiratory diseases here increased by 45% between 2007 and 2017.

Despite the high symptom burden affecting patients, evidence suggests that people living and dying with these conditions in Northern Ireland may face barriers to accessing timely and high-quality palliative care and support.

What are the benefits of palliative care and palliative interventions for people with chronic respiratory diseases? How can stakeholders from the Health and Social Care system, voluntary sector and beyond work together to overcome the barriers patients in this cohort face to accessing palliative care? What lessons can we learn from palliative care provision for people with chronic respiratory diseases in other jurisdictions?

On 27 February 2019, Marie Curie will bring together an expert panel of speakers to explore these crucial issues and more. Delegates will hear from:

  • Anne Marie Marley – Respiratory Nurse Consultant, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust

  • Lesley Rutherford – Nurse Consultant in Palliative Care, Marie Curie Hospice Belfast and Belfast Health and Social Care Trust

  • Dr Clare McVeigh – Lecturer, School of Nursing Midwifery, Queen's University Belfast

  • Dr Joan Regan – Co-Medical Director, Marie Curie Hospice Belfast and Consultant in Palliative Medicine, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust

  • Dr Kelly Martinez, Clinical Psychologist, Belfast Health and Social Care Trust

The presentations will be followed by a Q&A session with the audience.
