Event description
A self-guided field trip to the Ashmolean with Dr Jennifer Wong

About this event

From a painting on the wall to a hand-me-down vase, family cutlery or the furniture in a home -- what do these objects tell us, especially to those who feel they belong to more than one place or culture? What are the things you have treasured and kept all these years? What are the unspoken histories of such things? How do we preserve our memories, translate them into texts?

In this workshop, Jennifer will share some memorable objects she has brought from Hong Kong and the stories behind them.

Participants can choose to join at 2.30pm at the Ashmolean or at 4pm at TORCH venue.

Timings:

Monday 6th June: 2:30pm - 3:45pm BST: Field trip with Dr Jennifer Wong

Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

As a way to encourage participants to think about objects, they are welcome to visit the Ashmolean on a self-guided field trip together at 2.30pm to take some writing notes on objects that inspire. Please note that this field trip is not required in order to attend the afternoon workshop. The self-guided tour will be facilitated by Prof Jennifer Altehenger, Jennifer Wong and poet Penny Boxall.

Limited places, click here to register.

Monday 6th June: 4pm - 6pm BST: Creative Writing Workshop, A Personal History of Objects

Seminar Room, Level 3, Radcliffe Humanities Building, TORCH Oxford

Creative writing workshop led by Jennifer Wong and Penny Boxall. Workshop participants are invited to bring along any memorable objects from their own homes, from everyday items of use to treasured mementos. They will be encouraged to share the history of the objects they bring, using them as a writing prompt for creating a poem or a piece of non-fiction. In this process, we will experiment with different ways of representing objects and capturing memories on the page.

Please note that you can still attend the workshop without taking part in the Ashmolean field trip.
