About this event

“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.” — Lao Tzu. This day course will take a gently philosophical approach to the relationship between humanity and nature. Exploring the though-provoking ideas of Arne Naess and ‘Deep Ecology’, Henry David Thoreau’s Walden, and the Daoist worldview of harmony with nature, we will consider how these concepts might be applied to modern challenges. Through discussion, contemplative writing and meditative walking, we will seek to foster a deeper connection with the natural world.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any background in philosophy to attend?

Not at all. The course is designed for curious, thoughtful adults of all backgrounds. No prior knowledge is assumed — just a love of learning and a willingness to reflect.

What should I bring with me?

Please bring a notebook or journal, a pen, and suitable clothing for a short outdoor walk (weather permitting). A light lunch and water bottle are also recommended.

Will we be outside the whole day?

No — most of the course takes place indoors in a comfortable space. There will be one short, guided outdoor session (weather allowing), focused on mindful observation in nature.

Is the course physically demanding?

Not at all. The day is gentle and reflective, with optional light walking. Chairs will be available throughout, and the environment is suitable for those with limited mobility.

Can I come on my own?

Absolutely. Many attendees come alone, and the day is structured to be welcoming and inclusive for individuals as well as small groups.

Will there be refreshments?

Tea, coffee, and light refreshments will be provided. Please bring your own lunch.

How many people will be there?

The group will be small and intimate — probably no more than 10 participants — to allow for meaningful discussion and personal reflection.

Is this a religious or spiritual event?

No, the course is philosophical and contemplative in nature. It draws on wisdom traditions (like Daoism) in a way that is inclusive, reflective, and open to all perspectives.
