About this event

“Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.” — Lao Tzu. This day course will take a gently philosophical approach to the relationship between humanity and nature. Exploring the though-provoking ideas of Arne Naess and ‘Deep Ecology’, Henry David Thoreau’s Walden, and the Daoist worldview of harmony with nature, we will consider how these concepts might be applied to modern challenges. Through discussion, contemplative writing and meditative walking, we will seek to foster a deeper connection with the natural world.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any background in philosophy to take part?

Not at all. This course is open to everyone — no prior study is required. Ideas will be introduced in an accessible way, with an emphasis on reflection and experience rather than academic theory.

What exactly will we be doing during the day?

The day will blend short talks, guided discussions, contemplative writing, and gentle meditative practice (including a short walk or sit outdoors). It’s a calm, reflective day, designed to help you explore your relationship with nature in thoughtful and creative ways.

Is this a course about environmental issues?

Not directly. While ecological concern is an important undercurrent, the course focuses more on our personal and philosophical relationship with nature. Through ideas from Deep Ecology, Thoreau, and Daoism, we’ll reflect on how to live more attentively and harmoniously within the natural world.

Will there be any outdoor activity?

Weather permitting, we will include a short meditative walk or quiet sit outdoors, likely in the beautiful Morrab Gardens. No special gear or fitness is required — just bring a willingness to engage the senses and slow down.

What should I bring?

Please bring a notebook or journal and something to write with. Comfortable clothes are recommended, especially for the short time we’ll spend outdoors. All other materials will be provided.

Is lunch included?

Lunch is not included, but tea, coffee, and biscuits will be provided during the breaks. There are excellent cafés and delis nearby in Penzance, or you’re welcome to bring your own and enjoy a quiet lunch in Morrab Gardens.

Is the Morrab Library accessible?

The Morrab Library is a historic building, and while the ground floor is accessible, some areas may be more limited for those with mobility concerns. Please get in touch in advance if you have specific access needs — we’ll do our best to accommodate.

What is the atmosphere like?

Gentle, spacious, and thoughtful. This isn’t a lecture-heavy day — it’s about quiet exploration, shared insight, and connecting more deeply with nature and self. Everyone is welcome, and participation is encouraged but never pressured.
