Event description

Description

A Place at the Table (now in its third year) provides a unique space for the children’s book world to come together in order to explore practical ways of effecting real change, share good practice and commit to specific action on inclusion and diversity.

What?
This year the event will take a full-day format. This will allow us to introduce some exciting new features, whilst retaining the popular discussion-based format and involving a range of inspirational speakers who will offer new food for thought. The round-table activity will allow for a celebration of what has been achieved and what progress has been made, as well as plenty of discussion and the opportunity to bounce ideas, share concerns, seek out solutions and plan your own next steps.

The new elements include the Inclusive Minds Forum, giving you the chance to chat with one of our Ambassadors for Inclusion and/or a subject specialist in a small group. A mixture of direct consultancy and training, the forum will enable you to pick the brains of a range of experts, talk about work in progress, ideas and forthcoming projects, or even gaps in the market, and will allow you to build your knowledge and confidence in a particular aspect of inclusion.

There will also be the chance for attendees to share industry updates and case studies (we’ll need notice of these in advance) and you’ll be able to network over lunch, thanks to the longer format!

Why?
Three years on from the first event, the event has evolved to meet the needs of the industry and it’s time to review progress and see where to go next. Diversity and inclusion is not just a hot topic but an ongoing concern and this event will help to maintain the momentum.

Who?
A Place at the Table is designed for those working directly in the children’s book industry. With the new ‘forum’ feature and industry case studies, this year’s event will be particularly relevant to publishing staff (publishing directors, editorial, marketing and publicity, design, and sales). However, we are well aware that the event is valuable to others, particularly authors and illustrators. We also know that it may be of interest to other organisations, such as agents, library professionals, children’s booksellers and book buyers so we’ve made a limited number of tickets available for these groups. If you don’t fit into one of these categories but would like to attend, please get in touch.

Outcomes
Participants will be part of a unique movement towards genuine inclusion in the children’s book world. As part of continuing professional development, all delegates will come away with a deeper understanding of a particular facet of diversity, as well as practical ideas to move inclusion forward that can be applied in their role within the industry.

Tickets
Due to the extended format and new features, we've had to increase the ticket price a little to help cover all the associated costs. However, thanks to our partnership with the Publishers Association, our hosts Penguin Random House, and Child's Play for sponsoring tea, coffee and cake, we've still managed to keep prices fairly low. Concessions are available for small publishers* and there are discounts for Everybody In Charter signatories and PA members. If you fit into more than one of these categories contact us to receive a code for an even bigger discount. We want the event to be accessible to everyone, so please also get in touch if the ticket price is prohibitive.

*To be eligible for the small publisher discount, turnover should be under £1 million.

Speakers
We're currently in the process of booking some exciting speakers. Details, along with the full programme will be announced in due course.
