Event description

Description

PRINCE BUSTER was a legendary Jamaican singer-songwriter and producer who passed away in 2016. The amazing records he released in the 1960s influenced and shaped the course of Jamaican contemporary music and created a legacy of work that would be drawn upon later by reggae and ska artists.

For one night only, local heroes NATTY BO & THE TOP CATS will be honouring "The Voice Of The People" ( as he was known) by dipping into his massive repertoire featuring hits such as “Al Capone”, “One Step Beyond”, “Enjoy Yourself”, “Ten Commandments”, “Judge Dread” & “Take It Easy” to name but a few.

Support comes from South London jazz sensation OSKA T + Camberwell Connection DJS DUBPLATE PEARL & MR SWING EASY

This concert is the second in a series in the stunning surroundings of the Sir John Soane designed Grade 1 listed St Peter’s Church, Walworth.

We have very kindly been allowed to set up a bar + food stall INSIDE the church. Featuring draft beer c/o Orbit Beers and vegan food prepared by Louie Louie (aubergine & chickpea curry, coconut cauliflower, beetroot pickle, dal, flat bread & pomegranate raita), why not join us early and make a whole evening of it?

DJS DUBPLATE PEARL & MR SWING EASY from local clubbing institution THE CAMBERWELL CONNECTION spark off proceedings with an all vinyl 45 selection.

Throughout the performance, artist Oscar Romp will be painting the musicians ... and the finished artwork will be auctioned then and there after the gig to raise funds for funds for St Peter's work with vulnerable people in the local parish community, including their food bank and their winter night shelter for homeless people, which is part of the Robes Project

ABOUT THE VENUE:

St Peter's, Walworth is a grade one listed church designed by the celebrated Georgian architect, Sir John Soane. Since its construction in 1825, St Peter's has been at the heart of the community serving the needs of local people. The building was significantly damaged by bombing in the Second World War but was restored to it's former glory in the 1950s. One significant survival of the bombing was the magnificent Bechstein piano which is still played to this day.

Father Michael Robinson, Assistant Curate of St Peter's Walworth said, "We are delighted to be part of this exciting collaboration of community and music, bringing together so many different cultural influences into a sacred space. In this 2018-19 period when we remember the 70th anniversary of the arrival of the Windrush generation, this concert will be a great celebration of Jamaican culture and music”

ABOUT THE PROMOTER:

Louie Louie is a café/bar/restaurant hybrid on the Walworth Road SE17.

Delicious coffee & contemporary food by day meets cocktails, hifi music & neighbourhood dining by night. Thanks to a “Representative Music Residencies” grant from Arts Council England Louie Louie is able to present live music & workshops both at the venue + in the community
