This walk reveals the story of the development, the changes brought about by new technologies, and the contraction of the railway on Tyneside. Both sections last about an hour and begin and end at The Common Room. The walk will be led by photographer Eric Fisher and accompanied by early railways expert Les Turnbull and will include historical illustrations of the places visited to compare to the scenery today.

Part 1 : The Eastern loop

From The Common Room down Westgate Road towards the Castle and the High Level Bridge. Down via the Side to the Quayside, back up via Hanover St and Forth St.
Please be aware this walk involves steep gradients.

Booking for each loop is separate; an indoor picnic area will be available for those who wish to do both sections and wish to eat lunch in between. Additional hot and cold drinks may also be purchased from our café bar 5 Quarter. People accompanying walkers are welcome to use the indoor picnic space during the walk to wait for participants or take a tour of the building.
