Counselling professionals are increasingly seeking training for working with gender variant clients. Madison-Amy Webb invites them to consider a simple truth: everyone has a gender identity, whether or not they’ve given it much thought. By reflecting on their own gender identity through the exercises provided, counsellors can relate to clients in new and productive ways, gaining a more nuanced understanding of the issues faced by their clients and of their own identity.

Incisive yet accessible, this unique training shines a light on how the popular conception of gender identity came into being by looking at the social and historical influences at play. This context is then brought to life with a rich variety of case studies and excerpts from the participant’s own diary. Reflective exercises will allow the delegates to explore gender identity and come to understand their ‘Personal Meaning’ will help readers develop a deeper understanding of their own gender identity, while clinical techniques offer new ways to connect with gender variant clients effectively. Essential training for any counselling professional working with gender variant clients.

We will explore the truth of why the many forms of Gender variance within the history of the human species has be constantly covered up.

Session 4

Debunking Gender: The Trouble with Gender Variance?

Time to consider the truth that we are all a little bit intersex, and that instead of looking for differences between one another, perhaps it is now time to begin looking at our similarities, how each and every person on planet earth is determining their gender identity in a very personal way, it’s something we are all doing. Gender labels whether they are binary, or transgender all establish an other, they are also an example of gender lethargy) so it is time to consider our personal responsibility towards our own gender identity and those of our clients, dare we be ourselves? Here we will look at the implications of this.

Exercise 5: Personal Meaning – Part 3 In this exercise I will pose the last part of the personal meaning process and then round up the series of exercises by drawing together their findings. (This question will be addressed to the delegates and then they will breakout into smaller groups to discuss. All will come back together to feed back before the end of the session. Attendees will be encouraged to make and keep notes for each of the exercises, as they will be drawn in the final session).

About Madison-Amy Webb

I have been a therapist for 19 years and have known something didn't sit right with my gender all my life. I transitioned at a later stage in life and have since then been focusing my work with gender identity and working with clients questioning their own gender identity. My book aims to clarify a few of the misconceptions that there are currently flying around. My work is primarily focused on the lived experience of the client.

Why Online Workshops?

We are acutely aware that for many colleagues in the helping professions travel is extremely difficult due to time, money and health constraints. We are developing this programme so that the workshops offered by experienced trainers from all over the world can also be accessed by you from the comfort of your own home

This workshop will be hosted in the Zoom meeting platform which has all the resources we need to create an experiential group learning environment. The workshops will have access to an online group room, breakout rooms for small groups, whiteboards for creating and sharing resources and the capacity to communicate with voice and text.

How Do I Attend the Workshop?

30 minutes before your workshop is due to start you will receive an email which will include a clickable link to join the workshop. This will open the Zoom meeting on your computer or mobile device, please be ready to join the workshop 15 minutes before it is due to start so we can make sure everyone's tech is working ok and we can start on time.

When you register for the workshop you will receive an email with an invitation to meet a colleague from the onlinevents team in Zoom who will help you orientate to the Zoom environment. Because the workshop will require the use of the camera and microphone on your computer or mobile device we want to help you feel confident using your technology.

Please note that we are requiring that all workshop participants meet with a colleague from the onlinevents team before participating in the onlinevents workshop programme so that the workshop can begin and run smoothly. Any colleagues who do not respond to the invitation for the pre-workshop meeting will not be able to join the workshop. This pre-workshop meeting will prepare you to attend this workshop and any other onlinevents workshop that you choose to register for. You wont need to attend one meeting per workshop.
