A REGULAR WOMAN is shot documentary-style - insistent on fact and not straying into Hollywood melodrama. And yet, with the film’s soundtrack, slick camera movements, and freeze frames, there are times in Sherry Hormann’s film where it could be mistaken for Scorsese crime epic. It is an unequivocally stylish and singular film. Fact-based films risk straying into far-fetched action or painfully unstylish recounting, but A REGULAR WOMAN strikes the perfect balance.

The voice of Hatun Sürücü (played by Almila Bagriacik), known affectionately as Aynur, tells us straight away that she was shot by her own brother in 2005. “Why should we care now, after all this time?” she anticipates us asking. Sherry Hormann answers that question through the rest of the film, but in truth, no justification is needed - we are engaged from the start. Aynur is married off to her cousin aged 16. After he beats her, she leaves him, while she is pregnant. Already feeling that she has cast dishonour upon them, her family doesn't have a lot of sympathy towards Aynur. And as she becomes more independent - getting a job and a German boyfriend, and not wearing her headscarf - her family decides that they must take action. It is a sobering yet compelling story, originally told. / Reviewed by George Chadwick
