About Gauri Raje

Gauri Raje holds a PhD in Anthropology, diploma in film editing and trained in storytelling with tribal communities in India and UK. Since 2012, she has trained and worked with Theatre of Witness in Northern Ireland and England, a performance approach that focuses on biographical storytelling by people who have no experience with theatre. She conducts annual storytelling modules in India. Since 2007, she has been working with refugees and immigrant communities in the UK on various funded projects relating to urban land and storytelling as a way of understanding the process of settlement among immigrant groups in cities. She has worked with Fusion Arts, Oxford in developing storytelling as a way of creating city-level dialogues between immigrant and host communities. Currently, she runs a year-long storytelling project 'Long Journey Home: True Life Migrant Tales', with monthly storytellings by first generation migrants in Birmingham, UK.

Her projects include directing 'East of the Sun, West of the Moon' a collection of stories for adults from around the world translated and told in 3 different Indian languages, and 'Badlands', a storytelling of folk stories of the land and rivers of central India. She has also been touring in Oxford, Stockholm and London with 'Tales of Exile and Sanctuary', stories from all around the world exploring the themes of exile. She is working on a performance that combines stories of her ancestors, traditional folk tales and tales of the land from India.
