A short history of Hadrian’s Wall

This talk will trace the fascinating history of Hadrian's Wall, from the earliest Roman invasions of northern Britain through to the construction of the Stanegate fortifications and ultimately the building of Hadrian's Wall itself.

Drawing on archaeological evidence and historical research, we'll examine how this remarkable frontier defense system was planned and constructed across northern England. The presentation will highlight thirty key sites along the wall that visitors can explore today, providing insights into the daily life of Roman soldiers, the engineering challenges they faced, and the rich variety of archaeological discoveries that continue to shed light on this ancient boundary between Roman Britain and the unconquered north.
