Event description

Description

The UK’s “welfare” system is meagre at best and outright punitive at worst. It demonises the most vulnerable among us and forces people who need help to jump through piles of paperwork and a minefield of loopholes and exceptions which are difficult for even experienced staff to understand. Those who fall foul of the system are often unfairly sanctioned and suffer a total loss of income for weeks or months at a time.

But Scotland could be different. New powers over social security are coming to Scotland and the prospect of independence offers the opportunity for us to think about how we could design social security so that it puts All of Us First.

On October 23rd, Jeanne Freeman MSP, the Scottish Government’s Minister for Social Security, and Dr Craig Dalzell, the Head of Research at Common Weal, will present their ideas for the future of Scottish social security, will discuss the key issues with you and will answer any questions you may have.

The event will be chaired by Sarah Glynn from the Scottish Unemployed Workers Network and author of the book Righting Welfare Wrongs which highlights the critical failings of the UK’s welfare system.
