A Space to Talk and Be with Suzanne Lyn-Cook

Word of Colour’s Director of Creative Wellbeing and People and qualified Psychosynthesis Therapeutic Counsellor, Suzanne Lyn-Cook, will lead a group session, for 10 people, to discuss Covid-19’s impact and coping methods.

Suzanne says: 'We are living in a world that seems familiar, yet we are in uncharted waters. We are being brought to the edge of our comfort zone. All that we have built our lives and safety on has been shaken. Some of us are facing a literal fight for survival.

'For people of colour this experience can be more acute, as we may have pre-existing mental and physical health conditions, lower or precarious incomes and face persistent inequalities. We are all asking where and how can I feel safe, what will the future be like, and will my way of life still exist?'

This session will run for an hour and involve group discussion and activities that support reflection, identifying ways forward as we explore the following themes:

  • What am I/we are we learning through this experience?
  • What strengths, resources and experiences can I/we can draw on?
  • Am I able to ask for help? How do I deal with the unknown?
  • How do I/we choose to be in service of my/our wellbeing?
  • What is my/ our vision for our self when we come out of this time? How do I want my life to be? What needs to be sustained? What needs to be let go?

When: Thursday 11th June 2020 4pm - 5pm

This session will be hosted on Zoom.

You will be sent a link that is not to be circulated before the event. Please check your spam folder just in case.

All attendees will be sent a short online evaluation form to complete, post-event. This will assist us greatly in tailoring future events and will help us see what is of value to creatives of colour during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Rules of Engagement:

Kenny Mammarella-D'Cruz, a founding member of Words of Colour's Creative Wellbeing Hub, created this set of ground rules for his long-running and hugely popular MenSpeak group. We are applying them to our programme so please read them beforehand (especially no.1-11) so that everyone can have a meaningful and respectful session.

Please Note:

This session is part of a wider programme specifically for, and part of Words of Colour's professional commitment to, writers and creatives of colour.

Due to the delicate context in which we are running these sessions, and the fact that the majority are not 'events' but are workshops, group work and 1-2-1 sessions, we will not be recording or live streaming for public access, except for Sustainable Design for Social Impact with Ahsan Khan and Music, Spirituality and Giving Back: In Conversation with DJ Chillz. We may create selected podcasts from the audio, if relevant, and only of the facilitator, with their permission, as we want to respect people's confidentiality.
