A talk presented by Buzz Busby, Cotswold Archaeology.

Found in March 2023 by a metal detectorist, two Roman cavalry swords or ‘spatha’ were reported to and identified by the Portable Antiquities Scheme, then donated to the Corinium Museum, Cirencester. Funded by Historic England and directed jointly with Cotswold Archaeology, results of a 2025 archaeological evaluation near Willersey, Gloucestershire, revealed possible evidence of a Roman villa, but why were the swords buried at the site?

An 'in person' talk only, in Wheatstone Hall, Museum of Gloucester - this event WILL NOT be available online and will not be recorded. Please only book a ticket if you are able to attend in person.
