Young people have completely planned and directed this play, based on the harrowing true story of a young girl, Sadako, who survived the Hiroshima bomb. The play is set 10 years after this happened and focusses on the horrific mistakes made by adults, the love within families and the power of hope as conveyed by the practice of folding 1000 paper cranes to provide good health. The issues of race, culture, nuclear war, patriotism and forgiveness are complex for any audience but 'A Thousand Cranes' has been produced with the aim of stirring the theatrical imagination of a young audience by presenting another world that seems familiar. A child's flights of fancy is a journey to understanding through a story that is simple yet compelling. At the end, all the characters shout out ‘This is our cry, this is our prayer, peace in the world’, something we would all do well to keep in mind.
