Wed 5 April 2017, 18:30 – 20:30 BST
Padma Bushan Smt Kalanidhi Naryanan, the ‘Queen of Abhinaya’, fondly known as mami to her students passed away in February 2016 at the age of 86 and the Indian classical dance world mourned the loss of one of its best loved teachers.
In the early 20th century when Bharathanatyam was still predominantly a temple dance and fallen out of favour, mami was instrumental in raising the profile of the art form and brought it out of the temples to the stage. Mami specialised in abhinaya (facial expressions), an essential component of Bharathanatyam. She was a teacher at heart and her core set of pupils received intensive training at her institution ‘Abhinayasudha’ in Chennai, and several hundreds of dancers across the world also benefitted from her expertise as she constantly travelled and trained dancers. Two of her Abhinayasudha students Drs Annapoorna and Chamundeeswari Kuppuswamy will be presenting some of mami’s classic abhinaya pieces as a tribute to their guru on her first year of passing away.
