The auroras are one of the great natural wonders. But they are not confined to the Earth; many planets display auroras, and bright auroral displays likely shine throughout the universe. Here we discuss the auroras of Jupiter and Saturn as observed using the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes, and go on to consider auroras on planets around other stars.

Jonathan’s research background is the magnetospheres and auroras of the outer planets, along with astrophysical bodies such as exoplanets and brown dwarfs. Jonathan’s work encompasses theoretical and data analysis studies, and he has been using the Hubble Space Telescope to study Jupiter’s far-UV auroras for over 15 years. He has worked on comparing auroral observations with data from the NASA Juno mission, and most recently has pioneered James Webb Space Telescope imaging of Jupiter’s H3+ auroras.
