Event description

Description

The area around Gilford is famous for its long association with the linen industry and each of the buildings we are visiting has its own linen connection.

Our visit starts with coffee at 10.30 am at Elmfield. This Scottish Baronial house was designed by William Spence of Glasgow in 1864 for James Dickson, a partner in Dunbar, Dickson & Co. of Gilford.

From Elmfield we travel to Ballydougan Pottery where we will have a soup and sandwich lunch. Bloomvale House which is home to the pottery and restaurant complex, is a quaint stone and thatched building, built in 1785 for a Huguenot linen merchant.

In the afternoon we make our way to Gilford Castle, a building which shares many characteristics in style with Elmfield and was built for James Dickson’s brother in 1865.

The event concludes at 4pm following afternoon tea.
