Event description

Description

As part of Love Architecture week, Charles Holland will lead a walk from Dover to Deal. The walk will follow one half of the CHALKUP21 Art and Architecture Trail which takes in nine contemporary structures along this historic stretch of coastline.

The CHALKUP21 trail celebrates the role of contemporary art and architecture, demonstrating how it adds to the culture and the collective identity of an area.

Charles’s tour will take in six of the structures on the trail including Tonkin Lui’s Three Waves Dover esplanade, van Heyningen and Haward’s National Trust Visitor Centre and Niall McClaughlin’s Dover Pier Cafe. In addition, we will pass by a number of other notable historic buildings including the last house completed by the famous Arts and Crafts architect Charles Voysey, the art deco house formerly owned by Noel Coward and the Dover Patrol monument at St. Margaret’s at Cliffe. It will finish on Deal Pier, an example of brutalist architecture and the last pier to be built in the UK.

The walk will start on the seafront of Dover before heading up onto the white cliffs, passing through the seaside villages of St. Margaret’s Bay and Kingsdown before dropping down onto the wide flat shingle beach towards Walmer and Deal. The walk will start at 10.30 am and will take approximately five hours. We will stop at the Pines Calyx, another of the trail structures, and have lunch at the nearby Pines Garden tea room.

Charles has worked with Dover Arts Development on the CHALKUP21 trail, designing nine plaques that mark the structures on the route and writing a guide to each of them that features on the CHALKUP21 website. Charles is an Architect, writer and teacher. He is the principal of Charles Holland Architects and a Professor of Architecture at the University of Brighton. Having lived and worked in London for twenty years he recently moved his practice, family and snow globe collection to Deal on a permanent basis.
