A Walk on the Wild Side - Aylestone Meadows South and Great Central Way

Wednesday 17 September at 10.30am

Up to 2 hours with information stops, steady pace

Meeting at the Aylestone Meadows car park at the end of Marsden Lane, off Aylestone Road.

A Walk on the Wild Side is hosted by an experienced wildlife expert who will lead you around the meadows, pausing to talk about the different types of insects, plants, birds and other wildlife found here. This steady-paced walk is a great way to relax while discovering a little about nature in the city. Free to attend but booking is required.

Please note: Aylestone Meadows includes soft and uneven paths, and gates. This is not an accessible route. As we are looking at wildlife, we regret that dogs are not permitted on our nature-themed walks.

These walks are provided by Leicester City Council's Conservation Team, in collaboration with the Discovery Walks project.

Information about the pace of our walks, what to wear/bring, the weather and much more can be found on our City Council Group Walks page.

Booking information

Please book via Eventbrite. Alternatively, phone 0116 373 7589 (Monday to Friday, 9am-5.30pm). We regret our phone line is not staffed at weekends or bank holidays. Booking is required for adults, but not required for children (under 16). Children are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.

If you are no longer able to attend, please cancel via Eventbrite or contact us by phone so we can allow others the opportunity to attend.

Travel to the walk

Marsden Lane is a short distance from Aylestone Road, which is served by buses. There is a small car park at the end of Marsden Lane. To help plan your journey try the Choose How You Move Journey Planner tool.

New Walkers

If you have not walked with Leicester City Council before we will ask you to complete our Walker Registration form. You will receive an email in the days leading up to the event, with information about how to complete the form. You only need to do this once and can attend any of our walks thereafter (subject to booking a place on Eventbrite). The form is for adults only, children are not required to complete it.

Dress for the weather

Remember to dress appropriately for the weather. Our group walks will go ahead in most weather. We recommend the following:

  • Comfortable sturdy footwear
  • Bring a raincoat or umbrella in case of rain
  • On cooler days wear appropriate layers and a coat/jacket
  • On hot days wear sun protection (hat, sun screen)
  • Please bring a bottle of water with you, especially in warm weather.

Group size

Booking is required, so we can keep the group size manageable.

Self-guided routes

If you have been unable to book onto one of our group walks, or you prefer to explore with your family or friends, self-guided routes are available to download from the routes page of our Choose How You Move website or via the Go Jauntly smartphone app. For other ideas, do check out our Walk Inspiration page which features walk videos and quiz trails.

Enjoy exploring Leicester on foot.
