Event description

Description

“Opera, next to Gothic architecture, is one of the strangest inventions of Western man. It could not have been foreseen by any logical process.” Kenneth Clark, (British art historian).

The awe-inspiring cathedrals that originated in France in the 12th century and rapidly spread throughout Europe are impressive and enormous. Coronation churches, royal burial sites and the focus of celebration, they stand testament to the extreme one-upmanship of monarchs, who built ever higher and more flamboyant expressions of their own magnificence and power.

In England, there is no better example than Westminster Abbey. It has been at the heart of our nation’s life since the 11th century. With its lofty nave, stained glass windows, vaulted ceiling and dramatic flying buttresses, it is a remarkable testament to the innovation and skill of the world’s greatest gothic architects.

Eye-catching visual codes and secret messages are integrated into the fabric of the building. All designed to communicate how to lead a righteous life on earth in order to ensure a successful transition from one’s mortal life to eternal salvation. This experience takes an in-depth look at them, delving into the very structure of Westminster Abbey to better understand the medieval world and its beliefs and superstitions.

Tours commence at 10am and conclude by 5pm.

The price includes the services of your lecturer, entry fees, a morning and afternoon tea/coffee break
