About this event

This LIVE workshop will help attendees conceptualise stress, trauma, and harm by accounting for the interplay between intrapersonal, interpersonal, and contextual stressors, and their impact on mental health, with a focus on neurodivergent communities.

It will draw on a whole (embedded) model of stress, trauma, and harm, which expands beyond typical universalised and decontextualised approaches to understanding relationships and trauma.

In this model, relationships are viewed not only as interpersonal, but also as existing in conjunction with groups, communities, linguistics, environments, institutions, and sociocultural and socio-political structures.

A number of mainstream relational stress, trauma and harm theories will be reviewed in light of this whole model, including those addressing acculturation, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), normativity/variety, historical trauma, attachment, intergenerational trauma, introjections, language, structural policies, culture, and societal messages.

These perspectives will be explored in relation to how they account for interconnected relationships in the experience of stress, trauma, and harm within these communities.

Takeaways - Tools you’ll walk away with

  1. Understand a whole model for thinking about stress, trauma, and harm.
  2. Conceptualise stress, trauma, and harm for neurodivergent clients, with particular consideration of self and lived context (including opportunities for co-creation of possibilities).
  3. Begin developing an understanding of the overarching approach to embedding neurodiversity and neurodivergence into practice.
