Walking in the Footsteps of Ludwig Wittgenstein' as featured on Radio Four’s ‘Pick of the Week’
About this event
The Austrian born philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein is considered to be one of the greatest thinkers of the 20th century; elusive, compelling and inspirational, his writings read more like those of a poet or visionary rather than an academic. It can be argued that one of the key turning points in his life took place as he worked and walked in the hills above Glossop.
In the spring and summer of 1908 and 1909, the young Wittgenstein lodged at the Grouse Inn on Chunal in Glossop, now a private dwelling. Here he constructed large box kites designed to send meteorological experiments 5,000 feet into the upper atmosphere.
Wittgenstein had arrived in England determined to design, build and fly an aeroplane - propelled by a jet engine designed by himself. We could say that he arrived in Glossop determined to fly his body and left two years later, having decided instead to fly his mind.
Walk and talk...
The WAN.DER will be led by Michael, an art historian, artist and writer who has lived in Glossop for over 35 years. He has a particular interest in, and love for, our local landscape. He will be giving a talk on Wittgenstein’s time at Chunal. It will take place at Glossop Labour Club on Wednesday 22 June at 7.00 pm. Booking is essential and all are welcome.
About the walk...
The walk will follow the very terrain that Wittgenstein came to know so well. Participants will meet at KIN.DER on Arundel Street in Glossop, where you will be taken via organised transport to the start of the walk. Own transportation is optional, though parking is limited on Chunal.
The actual walk is quite short - from the bus stop at the intersection of Monk's Road and Hayfield Road A624, over the stile along the footpath towards Burnt Hill. From here, there is a 15/20 minutes uphill walk with a couple of stops for 15/20 minutes to chat and fly kites. There will then be a 30 minutes return to bus stop, taking in the sites and points of interest along the way.
To make the occasion really special, why not bring a kite along with you?
Participants need to be moderately fit, being able to climb hills and traverse uneven terrain. It is important to be suitably dressed for the occasion, depending on the weather, walking shoes, waterproofs, water, snacks and warm clothes should be packed. Participants will be out and exposed in open country for approximately 1 1/2 hours.
Talk only...
If you would like to only attend the talk at Glossop Labour Club, there is a separate Eventbrite link for this booking - https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ludwig-wittgenstein-in-glossop-tickets-354685362467

KIN.DER is a creative cooperative space that aims to share and promote creativity in Glossop. This is achieved through the shop and studio space at The Gasworks in Glossop, and also in a published and online zine and the WAN.DER series. KIN.DER currently operates as a non-profit making collective. All income generated from the walk and talk contributes to the cost of making the events happen.
