The dollar is king… but for how much longer?

With tariffs and sanctions constantly grabbing headlines, discussion of whether the dollar can maintain its status as the dominant global currency has never been so fevered. But is this situation really as unprecedented as it seems?

The International Monetary and Financial System (IMFS) has been rigged in favour of the dollar, followed by a few Global North currencies, for decades. It entrenches inequalities between the Global North and Global South, driving debt crises and ecological harm. But resistance to this system isn’t new.

For as long as the dollar has dominated, countries across the Global South have been looking at ways to resist and adapt to this unfair system. Working together, with regional payment systems, local currency trade agreements and more, the move away from the dollar long predates Trump’s first term, let alone his second.

To help make sense of this context, join us on Thursday 21st August, 6-7pm. Using global economic trends and current events to piece together the story of the dollar in the IMFS, and drawing on the themes from our latest report ‘Beyond Dollar Dominance: New money and payment systems for a multipolar world’, report co-author and Positive Money Senior Researcher Alec Haglund will take you through how the international currency landscape is changing.

Designed to be accessible to both those new to these ideas, and those who have been keenly following for decades, Alec will combine real world examples and trends with research and analysis from our report. His presentation will be followed by a Q&A, where anyone can have the opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts on this live issue.

So join us on Thursday 21st August at 6pm to discuss this new era for the dollar, and for the world.
