Discover the Art of Photography

Whether you're a complete beginner or ready to take the next step toward a professional career, this five-week hands-on course will help you develop your unique photographic voice.

Led by professional photographer Larisa Dizdar, this course will equip you with the technical know-how and creative confidence to take striking, meaningful photographs—whether with a camera or a smartphone.


What You’ll Learn

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:

  • Understand different photographic genres and identify your personal style.
  • Master the technical aspects of photography to achieve the results you want.
  • Tell compelling visual stories through your images.
  • Build trust and rapport with your subject for more authentic portraits.
  • Present your portfolio and receive actionable, personalized feedback.


Please bring your phone or camera to the class. You will be working in the studio environment as much as going to work on a location projects which will be set up in advance. *Please note: Change of program (indoor or outdoor session) depends on the weather conditions.

The course will be presented in five 2-hour sessions and will take place in Brompton Library's events room on the first floor of the library and on locations outside the library.

The £3 booking fee is refundable (minus the Eventbrite fee) on responding to the tutor, regardless of whetreher you take up a place or not.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE COURSE:

Session 1: Introduction
We'll begin by assessing the group’s current level of photographic knowledge and discussing individual interests and goals. You'll see presentations on various photographic genres and the role of social media in modern photography. We'll also cover the basic technical foundations to ensure everyone is ready to progress confidently through the course.

Session 2: Photo Reportage
London offers a dynamic backdrop—from its iconic skyline to vibrant spots like Portobello Market, Notting Hill, and the charming streets of Chelsea. In this session, you'll learn how to prepare, choose locations, and make equipment decisions to capture compelling cityscapes. Larisa will guide you step-by-step through the process of photographing urban environments.

Session 3: Still Life Photography
Still life photography has evolved beyond traditional studios. This session will introduce you to its artistic and technical basics, with tips on lighting, composition, and creativity. You’ll learn how to create visually striking still life images, whether at home or in a studio setup.

Session 4: Portrait Photography
This week focuses on the creative and technical elements of portraiture. You'll explore lighting techniques, backdrop choices, and posing strategies to capture powerful, authentic portraits. Larisa will share her professional tips on building rapport with your model to bring out their natural expression.

Session 5: Portfolio Viewing
Our final session is dedicated to reviewing what you've learned. You’ll present your work, receive feedback, and gain insights into what makes strong portfolio material. We’ll also answer any remaining questions and reflect on your progress throughout the course.

Note: Sessions will include both studio work and location shoots. Outdoor sessions are weather-dependent and may be subject to change.

ABOUT THE TUTOR:

Larisa Dizdar is a London-based photographer and visual artist with a career spanning over 25 years. Her journey began with formal training at Kingsway College in London and the Bournemouth Institute of Arts, where she was shaped by influential mentors who helped lay the foundation for her unique photographic voice.

Larisa is a seasoned visual storyteller and accomplished commercial photographer. Her work bridges the traditional and the contemporary- from the history of film photography to the fast-paced world of smartphones and photojournalism. Throughout the course, she’ll share her deep knowledge of both the creative and technical aspects of photography, helping you develop your skills, express your vision and grow in confidence.

Over the years, Larisa has worked on a range of notable projects, including:

  • In-house photographer for the Star Wars Exhibition, London
  • Portraits of La Roux, Mercury Prize-winning artist
  • A feature on BBC World Radio about her life and creative journey
  • Exhibitions at Frith Street Gallery and Mayfair
  • Published work in TANK magazine
