The A63 Castle Street improvement scheme in Hull involves lowering the A63 into an underpass at the Mytongate junction and raising Ferensway and Commercial Road to create a split-level junction.
This £355 million road improvement project aims to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow. These improvements will improve access to the port, congestion, safety and connections between the city centre and the tourist and recreational facilities
Underpass Construction:
The A63 has been lowered by approximately 7 meters into a 400-meter-long underpass at the Mytongate junction.
Diaphragm Walls:
Parallel embedded retaining walls, formed from 320m long and 20m deep diaphragm walls, constructed on either side of the road to support the underpass.
Ground Stabilisation:
The challenging ground conditions required extensive ground engineering, including deep soil mixing and jet grouting, to stabilise the area before excavation.
Split-Level Junction:
Ferensway and Commercial Road will be raised by approximately 1 meter to create a grade-separated junction, allowing for continuous traffic flow.
Road Widening:
The eastbound carriageway will be widened to three lanes between Princes Dock Street and Market Place.
Landscape Design:
The scheme incorporates landscape elements like tree planting, natural stone paving, and a new public open space to mitigate the impact of the roadworks on the surrounding area, including the Trinity Burial ground.
Revised Completion Date: Spring 2026.
Contractors: Balfour Beatty is the principal contractor, and Arup is the principal designer.
