Event description

Description

Barnsley Assistive Technology Team are pleased to offer this brand new course, aimed at Speech and Language Therpapists working with children who might use any form of AAC. This course is in no way limited to children who may use Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCAs), and covers children with all types of communciation difficulties for who speech is unlikely to be their primary or only means of communication.

The course covers:

- An overview of AAC terminology and theoretical models.

- Access methods for AAC (eye pointing, touch, switch scanning) and how to develop these skills.

- Assessment tools for AAC.

- Implementation tools for AAC (including develpment of low tech AAC sytems and supporting VOCAs)

- Care pathways for local SLT teams and the Specialised AAC service.

- Local SLT team development tools - IPAACKS and TOMS for AAC.

We aim to demystify AAC and demonstrate that it is part of the role of ALL SLTs as part of a Total Communication approach. This course will give you the tools to enable you to feel confident in both assessing and supporting children on your caseload who require other means of communication.

Please note: A Park and Ride service is available from Doncaster Racecourse, please contact Helen Robinson for details hrobinson8@nhs.net
