Abbey Pumping Station on the outskirts of Leicester town is a stunning Grade 2 listed building, and is MUST for any ghost hunter whether new to investigating or a old hand at the investigations. From the ghostly Engineer in the basements who would like some company and talk to people, to the attic where there have been some ghostly giggles of children.
Opening in 1891 there has been only one reported death in the building, but many accidents have arisen, resulting in many of these men not returning from the hospital, was it down to the injuries sustained whilst working or is down to the inadequate medical medical care available?
The Famous Leicestershire saying "the nine o'clock horses" originates from a man working at he Abbey Pumping Station. This is because Farmers of Leicestershire would collect the waste products from the streets and shops, but were only allowed to enter the city to collect it after 9 o'clock at night as it smelt so badly that the councils decided it wasn't right that they collect during the day. Any children caught out after 9pm would be taken to the farms and used as child labourers, to work the fields, in turn for the work they would be fed and kept warm and taught a trade, the police would also take any street kids to the farms.
Are you afraid of the boogie man? Can you calm the excited spirits of children? or does the idea of a Ghostly Engineer electrify your senses?
