Abdullah and Leilia Dementia film for NELFT staff
Wed 3 May 2017, 10:00 – 12:00 BST
How do you communicate with someone you love when they no longer understand you?
‘Abdullah and Leilah’ is a short film in English and Arabic about Abdullah’s experience of dementia and how the diminishing of his second language (English) effects his relationship with those around him and his care in a nursing home. This film is based on the experience of Iraqi-British Director, Ashtar Al Khirsan, whose father gradually lost his use of English and spoke mostly in Arabic towards the end of his life. Funded by the Wellcome Trust, this film has been shown to English second language speaking groups in London and the North in order to increase understanding, and open discussion about dementia. Dr Samir Shah of NELFT provided invaluable clinical advice during the writing and editing of this short film.
The event is free and food and refreshments will be provided.
