Do I need to have a spare room for fostering ?

No, we are open to discussing individual circumstances and are flexible on sleeping arrangements in line with age and stage of any child

What support will I get if I was a foster carer ?

We offer a variety of supports including appointing you a mentor to you as personal support to you with matching to the age range and type of fostering you choose to do. We also have support groups and well-being groups held around the city with support offered from staff and foster carers

Can I work and Foster ?

Yes, this is possible an  assessment will need to be made around the needs of the child before and after school.  We do not encourage the use of breakfast and after school clubs as we would like the child to benefit from being cared for in a family.  If your employer is flexible this can be explored

Can I foster when if  I am single ?

Yes we have many single foster carers within the Aberdeen City Fostering team, you  may be feeling worried about coming into the role on your own but there are lots of opportunities to from networks with other carers by means of support and many of children spend time together at events.

I have pets, can  I foster ?

Accepted Answer

Yes, we would  need to complete an assessment on your pet and risk assess this against the age range of child you are wishing to offer care too.

Do I have to have parented a child to be a foster carer

Accepted Answer

No, we appreciate that our foster carers come from many walks of life and some have not parented before .  Your capacity to care for a child will be assessed and you will be encouraged to complete training as part of the assessment

What training will I get ?

We offer lots of training, from our initial Skills to Foster training to a wide range of training such as first aid, child protection, safer caring, Theraplay and trauma informed practice to name but a few.

I am keen to foster, how long do I need to wait for an assessment ?

Not Long ! We have a Skills to Foster running on the 15th, 22nd & 29th November 2025 - 9.30am till 3.30pm
