Aberdeen Science Centre’s Summer School 2017

Get inspired and gain confidence for teaching STEM in this year’s interactive, hand-on and fun STEM Summer School. Explore the wonders of the space and act out an electrical circuit. Go crazy with maths, handle some exciting biological specimens and develop your engineering skills. All workshops will increase your knowledge and confidence and give you a whole new arsenal of skills for teaching science, engineering and maths in the classroom.

Activities in the workshops will be linked to the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence and will focus on using the new benchmarks to cover science experiences and outcomes.

Switch it on – Aberdeen Science Centre

Ever wanted to be an electron? In this fun interactive session you will act as an electron and discover how electricity works. Create simple circuits, explore the conductive properties of various materials and more. Activities in the workshop are linked to the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence and will focus on using benchmarks to cover the following science experiences and outcomes:  SCN1-09a, SCN 2-09a, SCN 2-10a

A Practical Guide to Sharing Science in School – Primary school teachers

In this useful and informative session two primary teachers that successfully incorporate science in their classrooms will share their experiences, resources and some experiments. How do they manage to deliver science within a busy timetable and throughout other day-to-day classroom hurdles? There will be examples of science for each stage – early, first and second with plans, resources and assessments.

Resourceful rainforests – Aberdeen Biodiversity Centre

Learn more about the biodiversity of the rainforest and get training on how to run a specimen handling session in the classroom. In this interactive session you will use branched keys to identify and classify different specimens, you will get hands-on with microscopes and explore our garden.

Maths connecting our world – University of Edinburgh

Mathematicians ask questions, set up investigations and explore problems, both in the real world and in the abstract world of mathematics. They are naturally curious about mathematics. Curriculum for Excellence places emphasis on investigation, exploration and problem solving. In this workshop, we will participate in some investigations designed to provoke some of that same mathematical curiosity in young learners and to encourage them to ask mathematical questions and develop mathematical reasoning and thinking skills. Activities will be drawn from a range of mathematical topics.

The wonders of Space– Aberdeen Science Centre

Discover the wonders of our solar system and beyond in this fun interactive session that includes various hands-on activities that can be used to teach about space and space travel.  Activities in the workshop are linked to the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence and will focus on using the benchmarks to cover the following science experiences and outcomes:  SCN1-06a, SCN 2-06a.

Engineering challenges – Aberdeen science Centre

Get hands-on with a number of engineering challenges that can easily be transferred into the classroom. For instance, help the farmers in Nepal to transport their tomatoes down the mountainside to the local market in the ‘squashed tomato challenge’.
