Event Details

Abersoch RNLI Bike Ride

The Abersoch RNLI Bike Ride is a fundraising non-competitive cycling event that starts and finishes at The Vaynol in the centre of Abersoch village.  Riders will be able to start at any time of their choosing between 9:00am and 11:00am on Sunday 1st October 2017.  Route 1 is a challenging 40 mile ride for experienced riders, Route 2 is a 30 mile route for riders looking for less distance and climbing, Route 3 is a 15 mile ride and Route 4 is a 9½ mile ride.  Routes 3 and 4 are planned for family groups with children.  All routes are tried and tested by local riders and designed around the beautiful North West Wales Llŷn peninsula.

The event routes were planned to accommodate the riding abilities of all participants. The roads selected and quality of surfaces were based on a comprehensive risk assessment and are suitable for group riding purposes, which will cause minimum inconvenience to all other road users. This in turn makes the ride more pleasant for participants, but also limits the impact of the event in the surrounding area. The route and event timings have been designed to ensure that wherever possible, there are low traffic volumes and away from major towns.

The 40 Mile Route

The 40 mile route will cross the peninsula to the north coast and then go west out to Aberdaron before returning to Abersoch .  Riders will leave Abersoch to go to Sarn Bach as a warm-up and then return to Abersoch to go up to Mynytho, then go down through Rhydyclafdy and Dinas to a check point at The Lion in Tudweiliog.  From there they will go west to a check point at The Ship in Aberdaron, then behind Mynydd Rhiw, through Botwnnog to Hells Mouth and up to a final check point at The Sun in Llanengan, then return to Abersoch.  The route is generally a recognised published route, following parts of the National Cycle Network.  The route is 40.47 miles long and has 3,067 feet of climbing, with a long climbs up from Abersoch to the top of the hill above Mynytho and from Aberdaron to the back of Mynydd Rhiw, along with several other challenging lengths of climbing.

The 30 Mile Route

The 30 mile route follows the 40 mile route, but omits the loop out to Aberdaron.  Riders will leave Abersoch to go to Sarn Bach as a warm-up and then return to Abersoch to go up to Mynytho, then go down through Rhydyclafdy and Dinas to a check point at The Lion in Tudweiliog.  From there they will go south to Sarn Meyllteyrn, then through Bryncroes and Botwnnog to Hells Mouth and up to another check point at The Sun in Llanengan, then return to Abersoch.  The route is generally a recognised published route, following parts of the National Cycle Network.  The route is 30.55 miles long and has 2,342 feet of climbing, with a long climb up from Abersoch to the top of the hill above Mynytho and several other challenging lengths of climbing further on.

The 15 Mile Route

The 15 mile route will use the lower land to the back of Hells Mouth to avoid the steep hills of the other routes.  Riders will leave Abersoch to go to Sarn Bach, then into Llanengan where they will start the circuit to Llangian and towards Botwnnog until they join the route of the other rides to come back to Hells Mouth.  On entering Llanengan, where there will be a check point at The Sun, they will do another circuit to Llangian and towards Botwnnog and Hells Mouth, call to the checkpoint again and then return to Abersoch.

The 9½ Mile Route

The 9½ mile route follows the 15 mile route, but omits the second circuit to Llangian.  Riders will leave Abersoch to go to Sarn Bach, then into Llanengan where they will start a circuit to Llangian and towards Botwnnog until they join the route of the other rides to come back to Hells Mouth.  On entering Llanengan, where there will be a check point at The Sun, they will return directly to Abersoch.
