Event description
A discussion on Northern Ireland's abortion history, its uncertain future, and its relationship with abortion rights in Britain.

About this event

Join us on 27 February for an evening discussion with Fiona Bloomer, Emma Campbell, Goretti Horgan and Breedagh Hughes.

Almost one year on from the new abortion framework in Northern Ireland, provision is scarce. Amid the upheaval of a pandemic, Brexit and the reality of abortion care commissioning, abortion in Northern Ireland remains fragile. While telemedicine has been rolled out across Britain, basic healthcare remains out of reach for many in Northern Ireland.

The difference in experience between those in Britain and those in Northern Ireland is a painfully familiar story, but why have such contrasting paths been taken in Britain and Northern Ireland? What has made abortion such a different experience for people and governments within the same state? How, and to what extent, can those of us in Britain understand the experience in Northern Ireland? Has a familiarity with difference allowed an acceptance of disconnect?

We will hear from four experienced activists based in Northern Ireland. Drawing on years of experience, we will discuss how histories have differed, how futures may vary, and how connection can be made as we look forwards.

Fiona Bloomer is Senior Lecturer in Social Policy at Ulster University, and is co-editor of a forthcoming collection on decriminalisation in Northern Ireland.

Emma Campbell is an artist, activist and academic, and is Co-Convener of Alliance for Choice.

Goretti Horgan is a socialist activist, Lecturer in Social Policy at Ulster University, and founding member of Alliance for Choice.

Breedagh Hughes is the previous Royal College of Midwives Director for Northern Ireland and a longstanding advocate for abortion law reform in Northern Ireland.
