Developing peer to peer resources for Human Rights

About this Event

Over the past year we’ve had conversations with carers across Scotland at our Human Rights of Unpaid Carers sub-group meetings. We’ve heard many similar stories about the struggles people have faced: that carers are not receiving their assessments as promised under the Carers Act; that practical advice about benefits, entitlements, and power of attorney is often hard to come by; that too often you are struggling on through crises before you get any help from social care. We also know, that what was hard before, has become even harder since Covid-19. Human rights are hard won, but recent events have shown that they are all too easily lost.

We have been struck by how many of you who have shared your stories have talked about things that relate to your fundamental human rights, but often carers can be reluctant to identify with the language of ‘human rights’. Our sub-group will run for another year. During that time we would like to work with a group of carers to design and develop some resources that tell your stories, and that help others to advocate for their human rights.

The first meeting of this working group will take place online via Zoom on Thursday 27th August 2020 from 10:30am to 12:30pm, and will look at how to take this piece of work forward. This meeting is open to carers and ex carers of people living with dementia. You do not have to have attended a previous About Dementia meeting to take part.

If you would like some support or assistance in participating in the meeting please do get in touch with us at aboutdementia@agescotland.org.uk.

Once you have registered for the meeting via this page, we will send you information to join the meeting in advance of the date. This includes the meeting link you will need to access the event, and instructions on joining by either online video call or phone call.
