ABRUPT CLIMATE CHANGE And Pursuing A Life Of Excellence, with Guy McPherson
Event Information
Description
Earth has warmed only 0.85°C since the Industrial Revolution began, but considerable evidence points toward increasingly rapid warming in the near future. Our civilisation has increased CO2 levels in just over 250 years by a greater amount than the historical variation between ice ages and interglacials. We are about to enter 'hothouse earth'.
In addition, atmospheric methane has joined carbon dioxide as a major contributor to planetary warming. There is evidence that vast quantities of methane from permafrost and Arctic sub-sea clathrates are adding to climate change.
This presentation presents evidence of these changes, and poses some questions for our consideration.
How shall we respond to anthropogenic climate change? What tools can society use to help us embrace positivity about the future? What role do individuals play? How shall we live once we become aware of the possibility of abrupt climate change?
Prof. Dr. Guy R. McPherson is touring Europe throughout April 2015. The whole tour is crowd-funded and each event is organized locally. The York organiser asks you to pay what you can, either through eventbrite or on the night into the donations bucket.
