Absolute Beginners Guide to Sewing and Making Clothes - 8 weeks

Classes run every Wednesday for 8 weeks from March 22nd until May 17th. There is no class on Wednesday April 19th due to Easter holidays.
LEVEL: 1 BEGINNER
Class length: 8 x 2 1/2 hour sessions (20 hours teaching time)
Have you have always wanted to make your own clothes, but not sure where to start? Then this is the course for you. Aimed at Absolute Beginners this course will take you through everything you need to make your first garment.
Even if you have never threaded a needle, or sewn a stitch, this course will give you sewing confidence and encouragement along every step of your exciting new sewing journey.
What is covered in the class:
We cover skills for 4 weeks (10 hours)
- How to thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin. Sewing straight lines, corners and curves.
- How to cut cloth and mark out patterns.
- Essential seams and hems.
- Inserting a lapped zip. Sewing on a button and making a buttonhole.
- Darts to fit and shape.
- Learning to press with the iron for beautiful results.
- How to choose a suitable pattern and fabric.
Sewing your chosen garment for 4 weeks (10 hours)
- Cutting your paper pattern
- Marking up and cutting your fabric
- Sewing up and fitting as you go along
- Finishing up your chosen design.
By the end of the of 8 weeks you will have made your first garment.* Everyone will work on a project suitable for Beginners level. *Based on full attendance over the 8 weeks
About your tutor: Christine's mum taught her to sew when she was six, which means she has been sewing for over 36 years! She has over 25 years experience in fashion, film costume, and self employment in Northern Ireland. She teaches with patience, enthusiasm and encouragement at every step. Our N.I Sewing Bee Angeline Murphy was once one of her dressmaking students.
The Venue: Classes are held in Christine's quirky up-cycled home studio which has been featured both on television and in magazines. This gives Christine access to her wardrobe where she can show students every seam, zip and different design that they will be learning.
Equipment: All sewing machines and sewing equipment is provided. You are welcome to bring your own machine if you wish.
Materials required at first class: 1 metre of medium weight calico cloth and 1 spool of thread, your choice of colour. Additional habadashery can be purchased in class.
Maximum in class: 5 students. Class sizes are limited to 5 people so that learning is focused and fun. There must be a minimum of 3 bookings for the class to run.
