    ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS SEWING COURSE

    2 x 6 1/2 hour classes held over the weekend of Saturday & Sunday 29th & 30th June 2024

Have you been inspired by the new series of the Great British Sewing Bee & keen to learn how to sew? Or perhaps you learnt to sew years ago & need a refresher- then this is the course for you! There's never been a better time to learn to sew & I'll show you how sewing can be budget friendly & more sustainable than high street fashion.

On this Absolute Beginners sewing course you'll learn how to sew with a sewing machine & make a bag & a pair of PJ bottoms. By the end of the course you'll have practised various essential sewing techniques, gained confidence to sew independently & sewn up your 1st garment.

Day 1 : Threading up the machine and bobbin, different stitches, adjusting tension, changing a needle and presser foot, discuss different fabric types, where to source cheaply. Start to sew straight lines & sew up your bag & learn French Seams. How to read a pattern & take accurate measurements. Lay out your pattern & cut out the fabric for PJs.

Day 2: Practice sewing curves. Start to sew PJs, consider the different finishing methods. Finishing off, sewing hems, threading elastic, discuss adaptations or fit alterations that can be made for future makes.

Small classes, so that you get the attention that you need as a beginner to gain confidence.

    WHAT’S INCLUDED

    • The class includes expert instruction, use of the machines, tools etc plus tea, coffee & and biscuits!
    • Fabric is provided in the form of upcycled duvets for the tote bag or bring your own (please ensure that you have at least 1metre of 100% cotton fabric)
    • Instruction handouts are available in class as a reminder of how to make more bags at home.

    What to bring

    For the PJ bottoms

    • 1.5m - 2m of cotton fabric is needed, you will need to provide your own fabric, (please contact me if you're unsure what to buy)- I do have some fabrics that you can buy from me at cost, (I don’t make any profit on them).
    • Matching Thread
    • If you would prefer to bring your own machine, just let us know & ensure that you have all the power cable, pedal & all the bits & pieces that came with it.
    • Glasses if you need them - don't forget them!

There will be time to stop for lunch on both days, please bring something to eat with you. Refreshments, such as tea, coffee juiice & biscuits will be available.

*Please note - the studio is accessed via stairs & the toilets are downstairs. There is free off street parking outside the studio.

We try to calculate how long a workshop will be and plan to finish each garment in the allocated time but this isn’t always possible, If you are unable to finish in the workshop time we will make sure you are confident with your garment to be finished at home
